Memorial Day Weekend 2011

Lots of growth and veggies in our garden these days.   Keith has been working in the garden several hours per day.  I enjoyed sitting and looking at the views yesterday morning before the warm temperatures of the day began.     Lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers are ready to be enjoyed already!    The girls and I attended a fish fry last night and had lots of fun with friends from our church family.   Maggie unfortunately was bitten on the hand by a donkey at the fish fry.   She was petting it, and it thought she had a carrot for it.  Later, her plate of food was carried out of her hands by the wind.   The wind was a blessing, however, keeping everyone comfortable and keeping the mosquitoes down.    Today's plans include walking, napping, and looking forward to the summer stretching out ahead of us.

A Food Post

This picture of our garden lettuce was taken a few days ago, and the lettuce has grown by leaps and bounds since then.   I enjoyed a garden fresh salad yesterday for lunch, and then added fresh lettuce to our tacos last night.    I have also been adding generous amounts of flaxseed meal to our taco meat for quite some time.   My family has never caught on and I feel good about the added nutrition.
We did have small ping-pong ball size hail last night but the garden survived just fine.

Maggie has taken a packed lunch to school every day for kindergarten and first grade.  Yesterday was the end-of-year party for the first graders, and the students were served pizza and snow cones, so Maggie didn't take a packed lunch.   She was very distraught as we left home yesterday morning, and cried all the way to school asking for her packed lunch.  She knew she would be eating pizza at school, but she kept saying, "I want my Mommy, I want my packed lunch!".   I guess she equates the lunch with having a little bit of me at school.  So, to my fellow bento-packing bloggers, your efforts and love ARE felt by the kiddos.     Here is a picture of a typical bento-style lunch packed in the Spencer Bento box from Pottery Barn Kids.    I love the inner-lidded compartment, pictured here with strawberries inside.  That's a pb&j sandwich.    The only problem I see with this box is the fact that although it will fit into a standard-sized lunchbox, it leaves no room for a drink.   We use the stainless steel Kleen Kanteen in the small size for water each day, and it will absolutely not fit into a lunch box with this box.   So, I found a large lunch bag at Gymboree that I have used all year, and I have even thrown it in the washer several times and it came out like new.   I hope Gymboree offers another large lunch bag this upcoming year.     I guess you could leave out a food item and put a small juice box in the Spencer box, but Maggie usually eats most of the food I pack these days, and I would prefer her to drink water anyway.     I don't feel that sending the water bottle separately is a good option, because being an elementary-school teacher myself, I know how easily children lose items that aren't inside a bag or backpack.

Wrapping up Another School Year

Here's Maggie, working on homework in my classroom at the end of the school day.  She is brought to my classroom from her campus each afternoon, thanks to the school's generosity in bussing the primary kids here to the elementary campus.  She does her homework and eats a snack as soon as she arrives.  We will be glad to have a break from homework for the summer.

Sadie's 8th grade awards assembly was this morning.   Keith and I attended and watched with pride as she received a medal for 1st place in UIL Spelling, a medal for her spelling team placing at the competition, a Citizenship award, and a Perfect Attendance award.   This is the first year she has been eligible to receive Perfect Attendance, and we were all surprised, since we hadn't realized she hasn't missed a single day of school this year.  She was the only girl in the 8th grade to have Perfect Attendance!   As I sat there with Keith, I couldn't help but be a little teary and reflective at what great kids we have.  Our efforts at parenting have been our best efforts, despite all of our ups and downs over the last 14 years, and it is wonderful to see Sadie blossom, bloom, and grow each year.      "Once upon a time, the world was sweeter than we knew; everything was ours, how happy we were then; but somehow once upon a time, never comes again."  This verse from the song "Once Upon a Time" seems so appropriate as our children grow up.

1st grade work- Telling time and more

Here are a few pictures of Maggie's recent school work.  I am very proud of the things she has accomplished in first grade.   She has learned to tell time to the hour and half-hour recently, and she also enjoys the social studies lessons about the community and what people in the community do.  This morning she announced that we have 7 days of school left.  She is very ready for summer break and spending extra time at home.  She will be taking swim lessons and participating in vacation bible school, among other things, but mostly she will be playing and relaxing at home.
I am really ready for school to be out as well for her, because even though she has had a wonderful year with very sweet classmates, a little girl drama has crept in recently.  Maggie has never been aware of clothing labels or what "brands" are popular, but this week she came home and asked me to take her to the clothing store "J.ustice".   Luckily, I happened to have a pair of their jean shorts on hand waiting for her to grow into, given to us by one of the dear people who keep us supplied in hand-me-downs.   I am really not ready for her to begin worrying about being in-style.

Sadie's Big Night- the 8th grade dance

Sadie had a great time with her friends and classmates at the 8th grade dance tonight.   It was held in her school cafeteria with a live dj and lots of balloons, glow sticks, and food.   I think looking forward to this night and shopping for a dress and accessories was a big part of what made this a special event for Sadie.  She and her friend Jessica got ready together, and made their fashionably-late entrance together.   Sadie's nails were done at the nail salon yesterday, but since we were in a hurry to get her to volleyball practice, we didn't allow enough drying time, so half of the paint was smudged and had to be redone today.  All of the effort was worth it to see how confident in herself she was among her peers tonight.

Sammy's Day as a Baby Doll

Early Saturday morning, Maggie played doctor, or would that be vet, to Sammy.  Later, he was the baby and she was the little mother.  Maggie gave Sammy "shots" with her doctor kit, took his vital signs, and tucked him into the baby bed.   He needs a job around here, and keeping Maggie busy is a good start.

Sunday, May 1

Maggie and Sadie both were stuck inside all day Sunday due to another round of spring storms, with high temperatures in the 40's.  Maggie brought all of her cardboard building blocks downstairs and constructed a house to play in.   She has done this before and usually balks at cleaning everything up after she is done playing.   This time, however, she willingly took everything back upstairs without complaining.  This "house" kept her busy for a few hours on a rainy afaternoon.

Pretending to sleep in her "house".
